Abstract

This article delves into the intricate world of oscillatory Kelvin-Helmholtz instability within a horizontal radial Hele-Shaw cell subjected to modulated rotation. The study focuses on the impact of gravity fields on the stability and dynamics of fluid interfaces, particularly when two immiscible liquids with different densities and viscosities are involved. Key topics include the experimental setup and technique, the role of dimensionless parameters in determining interface stability, and the observation of frozen waves at the interface. The article also explores the threshold of wave onset and the effects of varying rotation rates and libration frequencies on the stability threshold. Additionally, it compares experimental results with theoretical predictions, highlighting the destabilizing effect of gravity and the formation of thin viscous films. The findings contribute to the understanding of Kelvin-Helmholtz type instabilities and their potential applications in controlling phase boundaries and mass transfer in rotating liquid-liquid systems.
