Abstract

The chapter delves into the pivotal role of urban migration in Shanghai’s transformation from a regional commercial port to a global economic and financial hub. It divides the evolution of Shanghai’s urban migrants into three stages: from the opening of the port to the founding of the People’s Republic of China, each marked by distinct development profiles and characteristics. The influx of migrants, predominantly from Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, fueled Shanghai’s rapid growth, contributing to its industrial and commercial expansion. The chapter also examines the spatial distribution of Shanghai’s native and foreign resident populations, providing a nuanced understanding of the city’s demographic landscape. Notably, it highlights the three major waves of migration that shaped Shanghai’s urban demographic pattern, underscoring the crucial contribution of migrants to the city’s socioeconomic development.
