Die Geowissenschaften sind relativ jung; insbesondere die Ozeanographie unter ihnen existiert erst seit etwa 150 Jahren. Ein kurzer Abriss ihrer Geschichte, einige wichtige Namen und Meilensteine in ihrer Entwicklung und Fragen der Definitionen der einzelnen Zweige der Meereskunde wurden bereits in den ersten drei Kapiteln dargestellt.
