Abstract

The study focuses on the alarming extinction rates of Hawaiian Lepidoptera, which serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for conservation efforts. Despite their high diversity, native Hawaiian insects have long been neglected, leading to a significant lack of data and understanding about their conservation status. The authors assess the extinction rates across different islands and species, revealing that many species are presumed or possibly extinct. The article highlights the importance of ongoing surveys and the need for detailed studies of the life histories and habitats of these species. It also emphasizes the critical role of host plant conservation and the challenges posed by invasive species. The findings underscore the urgent need for increased support and funding for insect conservation, as Hawaiian insects are more diverse than other groups and face unique threats. The study serves as a crucial baseline for future conservation assessments and actions, not only for Hawaiian insects but also for threatened insect fauna globally.
