Abstract

The chapter delves into the historical context of Nigeria's ethnic and religious diversity, tracing the origins of conflicts back to the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885. It examines various types of conflicts, including secessionist movements, ethno-religious clashes, and socioeconomic conflicts such as farmer-herder disputes and armed robbery. The author argues that the current approaches to conflict resolution have been ineffective, and advocates for the integration of peace studies into the educational system to foster unity and socioeconomic development. The chapter also discusses the drivers of conflict, such as ethno-religious loyalties, poverty, and poor governance, and the detrimental effects of conflict on the country's unity and economic growth.
