Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical aspects of pedestrian infrastructure and accessibility in Kochi, India, focusing on walkability, connectivity, and spatial configuration. Through a comprehensive road inventory, it reveals that only 40.75% of the total road network has footpaths, with significant encroachments impacting pedestrian safety and satisfaction. The pedestrian satisfaction survey categorizes most road segments as QoS-C, indicating average user satisfaction and highlighting persistent issues with infrastructure quality and pedestrian comfort. Activity mapping identifies concerns regarding route directness and connectivity, with PRD values consistently greater than 1, suggesting that many pedestrian routes are less direct than optimal. The space syntax analysis reveals that while certain areas, such as MG Road, exhibit strong connectivity, they suffer from poor integration and accessibility. The study concludes that significant improvements are crucial to address safety concerns, improve connectivity, and accommodate the city's expanding urban population. Recommendations include expanding footpath coverage, implementing strict regulations against encroachments, optimizing the city's layout using space syntax principles, and enforcing pedestrian zones and regulations to foster more pedestrian-friendly streets.
