Abstract

Pedestrian safety at bus stops in urban environments is a pressing concern, particularly in cities with high levels of mixed-traffic conditions. This chapter delves into the intricate relationship between bus stop infrastructure and pedestrian fatalities, highlighting the critical factors that contribute to high-risk scenarios. Through an in-depth analysis of pedestrian fatalities in Delhi between 2014 and 2016, the study identifies key infrastructure attributes and traffic characteristics that significantly impact pedestrian safety. The research reveals that factors such as sidewalk width, cleanliness, and the presence of bus bays play pivotal roles in determining the risk of pedestrian fatalities. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of lighting conditions and the effectiveness of grade-separated crossings in mitigating risks. The chapter proposes several countermeasures, including maintaining standard sidewalk widths, improving cleanliness, and enhancing lighting around bus shelters. These recommendations are supported by empirical data and statistical models, providing a robust foundation for policymakers and urban planners aiming to create safer pedestrian environments. The findings offer a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and solutions related to pedestrian safety at high-risk bus stops, making it an essential read for anyone involved in urban development and traffic safety.
