General Motors is taking over the San Francisco start-up specialising in self-driving vehicles, Cruise Automation, in the hope of kick-starting its in-house development of automated vehicles. The new structure will see Cruise operating as a standalone unit within the Autonomous Vehicle Development team recently established within GM, overseen by newly appointed manager Doug Parks, currently GM Vice President of Autonomous Technology and Vehicle Execution. The San Francisco based Cruise will also retain its current premises. This company, which was founded in 2013, initially developed retrofit construction sets intended to turn conventional cars into self-driving vehicles.
