Audi has opened Germany's largest multi-use storage unit on the European Energy Forum's Campus (EUREF) in Berlin. The unit consists of used lithium-ion batteries, has a capacity of 1.9 MWh, and is intended to enable the testing of a range of interaction scenarios between electric cars and the power grid. The goal is to use the storage capacity of electric vehicles in an intelligent way. In the use-case, the project partners intend to demonstrate how excess renewable energy can be deliberately stored. The energy storage can then be used to compensate for power grid fluctuations, react to local surges in demand and stabilize the transmission grid to avoid blackouts. A further application would be fast charging stations in close proximity that are able to charge electric vehicles at up to 175 kW. The storage unit has a footprint of 110 m² and is connected to Berlin's grid providing 1 MW of power, which corresponds to the charging requirement for around 200 electric vehicles.
