Abstract

The article delves into the performance comparison of single and double face masks, focusing on filtration efficiencies, breathing resistance, and CO2 content. It begins by discussing the importance of face masks in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and the various types of masks available. The study then introduces the concept of double masking and its potential benefits. The methodology involves using different types of 3-ply face masks and fabric masks to create various double mask configurations. The performance of these masks is evaluated through characterisation methods such as scanning electron microscopy, filtration efficiency tests, breathing resistance tests, and CO2 content analyses. The results show that double masking significantly improves filtration efficiencies, although it also increases breathing resistance and CO2 content. The article concludes by highlighting the trade-offs between protection and comfort, and the potential of double masking as a cost-effective alternative to N95 respirators.
