Abstract

This chapter delves into the performance evaluation of asphalt mixtures incorporating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as a modifier. The study focuses on the impact of PET on bitumen properties and the overall durability of asphalt mixtures, with a particular emphasis on resistance to rutting and cracking. Through a series of laboratory tests, including penetration, softening point, Los Angeles Abrasion Value (LAAV), Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV), and Marshall Stability tests, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of the mechanical properties and performance of PET-modified asphalt. The findings indicate that incorporating PET into asphalt mixtures significantly enhances their stability, stiffness, and resistance to deformation, making it a promising solution for improving pavement performance and sustainability. The optimal percentage of PET replacement is determined to be 7% by weight, offering the best balance of improved mechanical properties and environmental benefits. This study highlights the potential of utilizing plastic waste in construction materials, contributing to both waste reduction and the development of more durable and sustainable infrastructure.
