Abstract

This chapter delves into the performance evaluation of Web Feature Service (WFS) consumption using Python and Cython, focusing on execution times for various operations such as connection, layer reading, data download, and GML file handling. The study compares the performance of CPython and Cython, with and without variable type definitions, across three international WFS services. Key findings include minimal differences between CPython and pure Cython, but significant improvements when using Cython with variable type definitions. The results demonstrate that Cython can offer notable performance enhancements in handling WFS services, particularly in connection, layer reading, and GML file operations. The chapter also discusses the practical implications of these findings for spatial data users aiming to optimize their applications and processes related to WFS services.
