Im Wintersemester 2015/2016 gab es mit über 120.000 Maschinenbaustudenten einen Höchststand in Deutschland. Seitdem ist die Zahl kontinuierlich auf weniger als drei Viertel gesunken (Wintersemester 22/23 als letzte Erhebung).
