Research Skills and Integration with University Teaching and Community Engagement

Research skills in university professors must be significant in order to achieve greater integration with the functions of teaching and community outreach. In this sense, this research aims to describe the perception of teachers in relation to the importance they give to research as an integrative element. It focuses on the quantitative paradigm, being descriptive. The survey was used as data collection technique. The study was applied to three universities located in Quito; the population consisted of 299 teachers, of whom 274 answered the questionnaire. The results show that, of the twelve sub-indicators analyzed, eleven show a “moderate” level of use of research as a factor of integration with teaching and community engagement. The responses of the managers coincide with those expressed by the teachers in the sense that each substantive function works independently of the others, and only in some cases is there an overlap of the three functions. Strategic guidelines were proposed to overcome the situation.

The Mediterranean Dietary Pattern in Higher Education: From Perception to Reality

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of some sociodemographic factors on the adherence of students at the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda to the Mediterranean Dietary Pattern (MDP), using the PREDIMED scale. The sample consisted of 316 students, mostly female and with an average age of 20.6 years.Although 84.8% of respondents said they knew about the MDP and 86.1% said they adopted it, only 15.8% actually demonstrated behaviours compatible with this pattern according to the PREDIMED scale. This mismatch suggests an incorrect perception or lack of knowledge of the specific MDP criteria.A summary analysis of the results of the PREDIMED scale revealed low adherence to the consumption of wine, oleaginous fruits and fish, essential components of the MDP, although olive oil as the main fat and the consumption of vegetables and cereals were prevalent. With regard to sociodemographic factors per se, the study did not show a close relationship between greater adherence to the MDP in relation to age, gender, geographical location of origin, type of course and parents’ schooling, which may suggest that there are other factors, such as lifestyle in an academic context, group influences and day-to-day management, which may have a greater impact on students’ eating habits.

Impact of the Information Consumption Culture on Public Perception of Artificial Intelligence

The advent of generative artificial intelligence technologies has reignited fears of human replacement by machines: four in ten Brazilians are afraid of losing their jobs to AI. The following article revisits discussions from the Frankfurt School — specifically the concept of semi-formation (Halbbildung) by Adorno and Horkheimer, and technological rationality by Marcuse — along with a 25-year analysis of Public Understanding of Science (PUS) surveys, concepts of scientific literacy, and the trend of social media algorithms favoring the distribution of more sensationalist/negative content, to raise hypotheses about the root causes of this phenomenon. The results of an exploratory analysis indicate that the way individuals stay informed on the topic — whether proactively or passively — impacts their perceptions and feelings toward it. Those who consume algorithm-driven content via digital media platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are more likely to perceive AI as a highly dangerous technology. In contrast, individuals who adopt a more active approach to seeking information, turning to potentially less sensationalist content produced by experts, tend to hold a less alarmist view.

Assessing Digital and Info-Communication Competencies in Higher Education: A Blended Approach for e-Learning Environments

In an era increasingly shaped by information and communication technologies, assessing digital and info-communication competencies among students has become a focal point for academic and institutional initiatives. Various projects, both within and outside Academia, have sought to classify students’ competencies at different levels, often relying on standardized tests and self-assessment questionnaires. However, as technological advancements rapidly evolve, universities face mounting pressure to align educational strategies with high levels of digital and info-communication proficiency and with the competitive demands of the labor market. It is, therefore, important to study these assessment tools further.Blended assessment methods, combining practical tests with self-perception questionnaires, offer a more nuanced evaluation of students’ digital competencies. By integrating objective skills assessments with self-reported proficiency, this approach captures a broader spectrum of abilities, recognizing the influence of diverse teaching models, students’ academic backgrounds, prior digital exposure, and access to technological resources. This is particularly relevant in distance higher education, where continuous engagement in virtual learning environments provides ongoing opportunities for monitoring digital and info-communication competencies development.Despite growing academic interest in this field, empirical research on digital and info-communication competencies in Portuguese higher education, particularly in e-learning contexts, remains limited. This paper presents the development of a digital literacy test and a questionnaire designed to assess students’ digital and info-communication practices. These instruments were created as part of the ongoing research project Digital and Infocommunicational Competencies in Virtual Learning Environments: Practices in e-Learning Curricular Units in Portuguese Higher Education.

Intelligent Tutor for Tasks in The Domain of Linear Algebra

Difficulties in learning linear algebra are well-documented and arise from epistemological, didactic, and instructional factors. This study presents the design of an affective intelligent tutor focused on the mathematical object known as systems of linear equations (SLE). The tutor provides adaptive feedback and was developed using an iterative methodology that combines design, internal validation, and continuous improvement. It integrates several components: A didactic knowledge module, a model of ideal student behavior, a pedagogical tutoring module, a graphical interface, and an affective module based on computer vision. This affective component employs the DeepFace library, integrated with OpenCV and PyQt6, to detect emotions in real time through facial expressions. Emotional inputs are processed to compute a stress index, which triggers adaptive, affective feedback during task execution. The current version includes one task designed to help students coordinate the seven different representations of a 3 × 2 SLE, thereby enhancing their understanding of the solution set. To date, expert and functional validation has been conducted. The tutor shows potential as a support tool for autonomous learning and as a training resource for future mathematics teachers. Preliminary testing with experts revealed challenges such as redundant emotion detection and visual overlap of interface elements. These findings have informed subsequent redesign efforts. Although still in the prototype phase, the system shows promise in supporting representational coordination in tasks involving SLE.

Pedagogical Methodology and Inclusive Education

Pedagogical methodologies in inclusive education are aimed at guaranteeing the right of all students to learn under equal conditions, recognizing and valuing diversity in the classroom. These methodologies are characterized by their flexibility, personalization, and student-centered approach. Among the most prominent are Universal Design for Learning (UDL), cooperative learning, multilevel teaching and project work, which allow content, processes and assessments to be adapted in different styles, rhythms and learning needs according to the needs of students. Therefore, these strategies promote participation, peer collaboration, and the development of cognitive and socio-emotional competencies. It is said that effective inclusion requires the teacher to act as a mediator, adjusting their practices according to the particularities and needs of the group with continuous training in attention to diversity. In addition, inclusive methodologies integrate technological tools, differentiated assessments and accessible materials to eliminate barriers in the development of learning and thus not only improve the academic performance of students with special educational needs, but also the classroom climate and the learning of the entire school community become different, thus consolidating a fairer education, equitable and quality.

Chile and the Challenge of Sustainable Reporting: Key Advances and New Perspectives

Historically, investors have required financial information as a fundamental basis for decision-making. Asset valuation has been a subject of ongoing debate, intensified by the multinationalization of companies and globalization, which has generated a broad discussion on comparative accounting. This essay reviews how the positioning of international standards issued by the IASB has faced various challenges, from which important lessons have been drawn. Since 2008, Chile has gradually begun to integrate into the harmonizing trend of international accounting. However, the evolution of factors influencing investors’ decision-making, along with the growing prominence of other stakeholders, has led to a new set of corporate requirements. This shift has transformed the way companies report, moving towards new metrics, indicators, and types of qualitative information, known as non-financial information. This information is commonly presented in integrated reports. The new scenario in Chile, characterized by regulations that have emerged since 2022, is the focus of this work. The analysis will explore aspects of the Chilean process in both the financial and non-financial spheres, discussing the progress made and the lessons learned on the path toward greater transparency and accountability in corporate reporting.

Proposal for a Fitness Program for Police Officers

The National Police require adequate physical fitness to perform their functions effectively. However, studies show that many agents do not have it. This research designed a fitness plan to improve performance, prevent injury and promote health. A mixed approach was applied: qualitative (documentary review and interviews) and quantitative (surveys). Only 36% of agents are in good physical condition, more than 60% exercise less than three times a week, 51% have difficulties with their tasks and 33% have not received advice. There is also evidence of needs such as time optimization, adequate spaces and greater institutional support. Results reflect sedentary lifestyle, overweight and low participation in programs. In response to this, a structured plan with technical, pedagogical and technological components was proposed as a key strategy for strengthening the health and performance of police personnel.

Principles of Neuroeducation in the Educational Thought of José Martí. The Children’s Magazine “La Edad de Oro” (The Golden Age)

Although neuroeducation is a modern discipline, where neuroscience, psychology and education are integrated to holistically understand how the brain learns and to better influence the learning process, elements of this discipline can be seen in multiple studies within the Latin American educational thought of the 19th century, revealing its validity. This paper reflects on some ideas present in the work of José Martí (1853–1895) which, saving the distances, are part of the principles of neuroeducation. For the study we selected the magazine “La Edad de Oro” (The Golden Age), dedicated to the children of America, written in 1889 in New York, which synthesizes all the pedagogical ideology of this great teacher of America.Through an analysis of a selection of Golden Age tales, elements are identified that anticipate modern concepts of learning, motivation and cognitive development, courage, honesty, loyalty, love of nature and friendship. The contribution of this work is to bring to light these Martian ideas as a guide for educational action and to value the importance of making this work known in children’s education in the present XXI Century for the work of teachers and parents in the current context.

Digital Learning Ecosystems and Pedagogical Innovation in Higher Education – Emerging Perspectives on Teaching Practice

This chapter explores digital learning ecosystems in higher education, analyzing their intersection with pedagogical innovation from teaching perspectives. Based on a qualitative study with 12 graduates of a microcredential in technology-mediated education, the text highlights the compatibility of these ecosystems with various disciplines, emphasizing advantages such as flexibility, personalization and access to diverse resources. Participants reported experiences with hybrid models (such as flipped classroom) and digital tools (platforms, AI, virtual reality), which promote interactivity and student autonomy. However, limiting factors were identified such as: technological limitations (inadequate infrastructure), pedagogical (resistance to change) and organizational (teaching overload). The results highlight that technologies only become transformative when integrated into intentional pedagogical strategies, mediated by trained teachers and aligned with specific contexts. The analysis reinforces the need for balance between innovation and humanization, preserving the relational dimension of teaching. It is concluded that the effectiveness of digital ecosystems depends on investments in teacher training, infrastructure and public policies, in addition to a holistic approach that harmonizes “biotic” (learning communities) and “abiotic” (technologies) factors. The chapter suggests ways to rethink educational practices, highlighting the potential of digital ecosystems to promote active, inclusive and sustainable learning, as long as systemic barriers are overcome.

Technology and Digital Dialogical Communication in Esports Organizations

Technology has brought about the advent of instantaneous and omnipresent means of communication, as well as revolutions in the way organizations communicate. This is evident in different organizations, particularly in the electronic sports (esports) sector, where video games have grown to become an industry with a solid organizational structure. This sector was born in a digital environment, with websites and social networks, particularly Twitter, now called X. In this context, two-way communication gains visibility and the dialogical principle of the dialogic loop is a path for providing to organizations the possibility of creating interaction with their audiences. Thus, the main objective of the research is to study the degree of adoption of the dialogic loop principle by the esports sector, namely on the websites and Twitter profiles. To carry out the study, a mixed quantitative and qualitative approach was chosen, with data being collected from the websites and Twitter profiles of ten Counter-Strike Global Offensive esports teams through an analysis grid. We conclude that, notwithstanding some indicators the dialogic loop principle are adopted, there is low implementation of the dialogical cycle principle, both on the website and on the Twitter profile page.
