Abstract

The article delves into the phase evolution and thermoelectric performance of Cu2SnS3, a promising thermoelectric material for medium temperature applications. It discusses the advantages of Cu–Sn–S compounds over Cu–Sb–S systems, including lower cost and environmental friendliness. The study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of phase-pure cubic and monoclinic CTS samples, as well as mixed phase samples, using mechanical alloying and hot pressing. The thermodynamic properties of these samples are analyzed using DSC, XRD, Raman, and TEM techniques. The article highlights the influence of phase structure and phase transition on electrical and thermal transport properties, and discusses the potential for enhancing thermoelectric performance through doping and phase engineering. The study concludes with a maximum zT of 0.42 at 500°C for a mixed phase sample, demonstrating the promise of CTS as a thermoelectric material.
