Time-of-Flight (ToF) is a widely spread technique for depth imaging. The term depth imaging is often used as a synonym of 3-dimensional (3D) imaging, but sensu stricto the former is a specific case of the latter. In general terms, 3D imaging aims to capture 3D information of a scene in a 2D array of data (an image). The addition of a third dimension does not imply that the data are dense in all three dimensions of the scene space.
