Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricate relationship between fluid flow and the solidification structure of continuous casting billets. It begins by discussing the inherent segregation of solute elements during solidification and the formation of macrosegregation. The authors employ a local solute redistribution equation and various numerical simulation methods to study the impact of liquid phase flow on the morphology of the solidification structure. They use HT-CLSM to compare the solidification structure under different cooling rates and solidification processes, quantifying the differences through secondary dendrite arm spacing and fractal dimension. The study reveals that liquid phase flow significantly affects the complexity and spacing of the solidification structure, leading to more complex and coarser dendrites. The authors also discuss the implications of these findings for improving the quality of continuous casting billets and reducing macrosegregation defects.
