Abstract

The global shift towards renewable energy sources, particularly photovoltaic (PV) technology, has led to a significant increase in solar panel installations. However, the end-of-life management of these modules presents a growing challenge, with only a small percentage currently being recycled. This chapter explores the current state of photovoltaic module waste management, highlighting the environmental and economic implications of disposal versus recycling. It delves into the different generations of photovoltaic technologies, each with unique material compositions and recycling complexities. The chapter also examines the regulatory landscape, noting the absence of specific laws in many countries and the lack of incentive programs to encourage recycling. Technological advancements in recycling methods, such as electro-hydraulic fragmentation and laser irradiation, are discussed, along with their potential to enhance material recovery and reduce environmental impact. The analysis of bibliometric data reveals a surge in research activity since 2018, indicating a growing interest in addressing the circular economy of photovoltaic modules. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for global regulatory mechanisms and economic incentives to promote sustainable recycling practices and ensure the long-term viability of the photovoltaic industry.
