Abstract

The article delves into the generation and dumping strategies of coalmine overburden waste rock dumps, highlighting the environmental problems caused by these dumps such as loss of biodiversity, water contamination, land degradation, and slope instability. It discusses the challenges posed by the heterogeneous nature of the overburden and the need for phytostabilization to enhance slope stability and mitigate environmental degradation. The article also presents a bibliometric analysis of the literature on coalmine overburden management, revealing key trends and gaps in the research. Additionally, it explores the potential of phytoremediation as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for slope stabilization and soil decontamination. The article concludes by summarizing the research gaps and suggesting future directions for the safe handling of coal overburden dumps using vegetation.
