Pistachio shell biochar as a reinforcing filler in short Turkish hemp fiber composites: a path toward sustainable materials

Abstract

The article investigates the use of pistachio shell biochar as a reinforcing filler in short Turkish hemp fiber composites, emphasizing the development of sustainable and eco-friendly materials. The study systematically examines the tensile strength, flexural strength, impact resistance, and hardness of these composites, alongside their thermal conductivity and heat resistance. The results demonstrate significant improvements in mechanical and acoustic properties, particularly at an optimal biochar concentration of 15 wt. %. The composites exhibit enhanced tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance, making them suitable for high-performance industrial applications. Additionally, the composites show excellent sound absorption capabilities, with a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of 0.30, and reduced water absorption, indicating their suitability for humid and marine environments. The thermal conductivity of the composites is also optimized, providing a balance between insulation and heat dissipation. The article concludes by discussing the potential applications of these composites in various industries, highlighting their versatility and sustainability. The findings underscore the importance of optimizing biochar content to achieve a balance between performance and processability, paving the way for future research and development in sustainable materials.
