New Ferrari 296 GTB with V6 Plug-in Hybrid Drive

Ferrari has unveiled a new Berlinetta sports car with a mid-mounted V6 engine. After the SF90, the 296 GTB is the brand's second hybrid vehicle. 

Ferrari is dropping a plug-in hybrid sports car with a mid-mounted V6 engine. The abbreviation 296 GTB stands for the engine displacement (2992 cm3), the number of cylinders and Gran Turismo Berlinetta. The clean lines of the 4565 mm long, 1958 mm wide and 1187 mm flat Ferrari 296 GTB also reference the 1963 250 LM model. The sports car offers a short wheelbase of 2600 mm and stands on 20" alloy wheels in a double-spoke design or optional five-spoke forged wheels.

The teardrop-shaped headlight design at the front integrates ventilation for brakes. The wing profile on the roof, under which sits a vertical rear window, is striking. An active spoiler is integrated at the crested rear with semi-circular twin lights. The fully digital cockpit cluster in the interior adopts elements of the SF90 Stradale. A passenger display is also included as standard.

Ferrari 296 GTB with 610 kW system output

The 296 GTB is Ferrari’s first road sports car with a 120° V6 gasoline engine. Due to its shrill sound, Ferrari also calls it the “piccolo V12.” The IHI turbochargers are housed inside the “hot V.” The output of the new engine is 488 kW (663 PS). The maximum torque of 740 Nm is reached at 6250 rpm.

The combustion engine is coupled with an electric motor in the rear, adopted from the SF90, which sits between the engine and transmission. The MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit, Kinetic) comes from Formula 1 and contributes a further 122 kW (167 PS). The system output of the 1470 kg light sports car is 610 kW (830 PS). From a standstill, the 296 GTB reaches the 100 km/h mark in 2.9 s, and after a further 4.4 s 200 km/h are recorded on the speedometer. The top speed is over 330 km/h. 

PHEV with 25 km electric range

Power is transmitted via an eight-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) and an e-differential. The TMA (Transition Manager Actuator) ensures quick changes between electric and hybrid modes. The eDrive, Hybrid, Performance and Qualify driving modes are monitored by the six-way chassis dynamics sensor (6w-CDS). With a 7.45-kWh battery, the plug-in hybrid drive offers a purely electric range of 25 km and is capable of speeds of up to 135 km/h in pure electric mode.

For more driving dynamics, customers of the 296 GTB can choose the Assetto Fiorano package, which offers racing-derived adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers, carbon fiber exterior and interior add-ons, and a lighter Lexan rear window, among other features.
