5. Pneumatic Tire Technology

Abstract

The pneumatic tire is one of the most indispensable components that have been crucial to the success of the automotive industry. For its design, four elements, i.e., shape, construction, pattern, and material, are considered, and the tire performance has been analyzed by appropriately combining the four elements. In this chapter, a historical review on tires in general is given first, followed by the engineering design of tire performance. The future trends of tires are to be presented based on the concept that the more safety of all the relevant persons (not only the driver and the passengers) and more compassion on environmental issues are a must. Technically, more understanding at the nanometer-level is requested on tire performances.
