Abstract

This chapter delves into the changing patterns of protest mobilisation in Poland, from the robust civil society under communism to the polarised society of today. It begins by examining the role of Solidarity in the fall of communism and the subsequent transformation of Poland's political landscape. The chapter then explores the impact of economic reforms in the 1990s, which led to significant trade union-led protests despite being implemented by Solidarity-derived parties. The stabilisation of the party system around two post-Solidarity parties, Law and Justice (PiS) and Civic Platform (PO), marked a shift towards identity-based protests and the rise of right-wing mobilisations. The chapter also discusses the role of political opportunity structures in shaping these protests and their impact on the political system. Notable examples include the Independence March, the commemorations for the Smoleńsk plane crash, and the All-Poland Women’s Strike. The chapter concludes by highlighting the profound impact of protest movements on political power dynamics in Poland, despite the country's relatively open political system.
