Abstract
China is the world’s top CO2 emitter, releasing (9157 Mt CO2 in 2013) one quarter of the global total and more than twice the emissions of the US. Without mitigation, China’s emissions will rise by a further 50% in the next 15 years. In November 2014, China pledged that its CO2 emissions will peak by 2030. Yet there is great uncertainty whether existing policies will be sufficient to make this happen. Here we propose steps that China should follow to curtail CO2 growth, through such progress China’s commitment to the climate will create the low-carbon market that will benefit the country and the globe.
