Abstract

The article delves into the evolving patterns of political and racial residential sorting in American neighborhoods. It utilizes a unique database from the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Area to analyze homeowners' preferences for neighborhoods that match their political affiliation and race/ethnicity. The study finds that both white and Hispanic homeowners show a decreasing preference for living in neighborhoods dominated by their own political party and race/ethnicity. Notably, the aversion to living in Hispanic/Republican neighborhoods is strong across racial groups, suggesting that factors beyond politics, such as cultural differences, may be at play. The research also highlights the changing dynamics of political sorting over time, indicating a potential decline in extremism as neighborhoods become more politically diverse. The findings have significant implications for understanding the drivers of neighborhood segregation and the potential for reducing political and racial polarization.
