Abstract

This chapter delves into the philosophical ambitions of political constructivism, a method for formulating the content, scope, and justification of political principles as solutions to public interest problems. It explores how political institutions derive their normative authority and the challenges of establishing principles that confer normative authority. The text discusses the distinction between people, principles, and institutions, and how different grounds of normative authority can apply to different political institutions. It also examines the historical roots of constructivism, tracing its key insights back to Plato's Republic and the works of Immanuel Kant. The chapter highlights the potential pitfalls of constructivism, including the Euthyphro dilemma, which questions whether principles are authoritative because they are constructed or if they are constructed because they are authoritative. It also explores the ontological and epistemic dimensions of constructivism, discussing how social institutions are created and maintained through collective recognition. The text concludes by discussing the promise of constructivism in politics and the challenges it faces as a method of normative political analysis.
