Abstract

The chapter delves into the state of gender and LGBT+ equality in Europe, focusing on Poland, Germany, Spain, and Sweden. It begins by outlining the EU’s progress in gender and LGBT+ rights, including the introduction of the Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025. The chapter then provides a detailed analysis of political mobilizations and inequalities in each of the four countries, highlighting the unique historical, cultural, and political factors that influence gender and LGBT+ rights. Poland, for instance, has seen significant backlash against LGBT+ rights, while Germany and Spain have made notable progress but still face challenges. Sweden, known for its exceptional gender equality, also faces new obstacles from right-wing forces. The chapter uses data from EIGE and ILGA-Europe to illustrate these trends, offering a comprehensive overview of the current state of gender and LGBT+ equality in Europe.
