Abstract

The chapter discusses the importance of anthropometric data in designing effective personal protective equipment (PPE) for firefighters. It presents the preliminary results of a pilot study on Portuguese firefighters, comparing their anthropometric measurements with those of U.S. firefighters. The study highlights significant differences in stature and weight between the two populations, underscoring the need for country-specific anthropometric databases to ensure optimal PPE design and safety. The chapter also reviews previous anthropometric studies and the methodology used in the Portuguese study, providing valuable insights into the challenges and importance of accurate anthropometric data in firefighting equipment design.
