Abstract

The chapter delves into the relationship between economic growth and environmental quality, focusing on Croatia within the European context. It explores the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, which suggests that emissions rise with economic growth until a certain point and then decrease. The study reviews existing literature on the EKC, highlighting inconclusive results, particularly for Croatia. It aims to fill this gap by investigating the short- and long-term relationship between environmental quality and economic development in Croatia from 2004 to 2018. The research employs a multivariate framework incorporating policy variables and human capital, providing a significant contribution to the EKC literature. The chapter also discusses the implications of these findings for Croatia and other post-transition EU countries, emphasizing the importance of sustainable economic growth and effective resource utilization.
