Abstract

The construction industry faces significant challenges, including a shortage of skilled workers, environmental impact, and housing shortages. This chapter investigates the potential of additive manufacturing, specifically 3D printing, to address these issues. By comparing conventional formwork methods with 3D printed permanent formwork in a staircase case study, the research evaluates the environmental benefits of this innovative approach. The study employs a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) framework to analyze the environmental impact of different formwork scenarios, including plywood, timber, and various 3D printed mixtures. The results reveal that 3D printed formwork, particularly with low clinker cement mixtures, significantly reduces environmental impact across multiple categories, such as Global Warming Potential and Water Use. The chapter also discusses the potential for further reductions through improved concrete mixtures and alternative aggregates, offering a comprehensive overview of the sustainability advantages of 3D printing in construction.
