Abstract

The chapter begins by outlining the EU's ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in transport by 90% by 2050, a challenge exacerbated in countries with low electrification rates, such as Slovakia. It reviews existing literature on decarbonization strategies in transport, noting a gap in research focused on rail transport. The methodology involves a comparative analysis of CO2eq emissions from diesel and electric traction in Slovakia, using detailed energy consumption data and emission factors. Key findings reveal that while electric traction significantly reduces emissions, diesel traction in Slovakia produces higher emissions than road transport due to aging locomotives. The chapter also models the impact of increased electrification and the use of battery-powered trains, showing substantial emission reductions. It concludes that while electrification is crucial, a combination of strategies, including the use of alternative energy sources, is necessary to achieve decarbonization goals in rail transport. The detailed analysis and modeling provide a roadmap for policymakers and stakeholders to implement effective decarbonization measures in the rail sector.
