Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of power quality enhancement in grid-connected electric vehicle (EV) charging systems, with a particular focus on the application of third-order sinusoidal integrators to control bidirectional battery chargers (BADC). The study highlights the growing importance of EVs in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, emphasizing the need for efficient and reliable charging infrastructure. The chapter explores various control strategies, including the Third-Order Sinusoidal Signal Integrator (TOSSI) method, which is used to extract the fundamental current component and improve power quality by reducing harmonics and enhancing the power factor. The proposed system configuration involves a bidirectional AC-DC converter and a bidirectional DC-DC converter, connected by a shared DC link, enabling efficient bidirectional power flow. The chapter also discusses the design and implementation of the TOSSI controller, which is crucial for maintaining system stability and improving power quality. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy under both steady-state and dynamic operating conditions, validating its robustness and reliability. The chapter concludes by highlighting the potential of the TOSSI controller to enhance power quality and facilitate seamless bidirectional energy transfer, making it a promising solution for next-generation EV-grid integration.
