Abstract

The article delves into the critical issue of climate change and its impact on biodiversity, focusing on the medicinal plant Bergenia ciliata in the Indian Himalayan Region. It highlights the urgent need for predictive modeling to understand and mitigate the effects of climate change on species distribution. The study employs an ensemble approach combining four Species Distribution Models (SDMs)—MaxEnt, BRT, RF, and GAM—to predict current and future suitable habitats for B. ciliata. Key environmental variables such as slope, precipitation, and temperature are identified as crucial factors influencing the plant's distribution. The research reveals that while current high-suitability habitats are concentrated in regions like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, future climate change scenarios indicate a significant reduction in these areas, with potential shifts in suitable habitats towards the Northeastern region. This detailed analysis provides valuable insights for developing conservation and management policies to ensure the sustainable utilization and preservation of B. ciliata in the face of climate change.
