Preparation and characterization of paper-based high barrier material based on heterogeneous graft polymerization

Abstract

The widespread application of biomass-based materials based on paper is the current and future development direction of packaging, decoration and construction and other materials, and the realization of high-level barrier material properties is a key technology and an important means. This paper proposes a new method for preparing paper-based high barrier material with excellent water resistance and oil resistance, especially high temperature oil barrier. PVA–PDMS-coated paper was prepared by grafting PDMS–NCO onto the surface of polyvinyl alcohol coating by heterogeneous graft polymerization using paper-based material as the carrier and polyvinyl alcohol as the base coating. The structure of the reactive cured coating was characterized by infrared analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance. The microstructure of the coated paper surface was observed by scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope, and the water contact angle of the coated paper surface was measured. The performance test results showed that the PVA–PDMS-coated paper could achieve the best barrier effect when the mass ratio of PVA/PDMS was 3:1, the Cobb value was 11 g/m2, the kit rating could reach 12, it had excellent thermal stability and blocked hot castor oil at 80 °C within 24 h.
