Abstract

The article explores the development of polystyrene-based plastic scintillators, which can serve as both wave-shifting materials and structural components in liquid argon (LAr) detectors. The study focuses on the preparation and characterization of these scintillators, including their optical properties, thermal stability, and mechanical strength. The authors demonstrate that these materials can effectively shift the VUV scintillation light emitted by LAr to the sensitive region of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), improving detection efficiency. Additionally, the polystyrene-based scintillators exhibit good transparency, high light yield, and fast decay times, making them promising candidates for use in rare event search experiments. The article also highlights the potential of these materials as self-vetoing structural components, aiding in the discrimination of internal radioactivity and external background sources, thereby enhancing the background reduction capability of LAr detectors.
