Abstract

This article delves into the preparation and properties of novel superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) synthesized using chitosan derivatives, specifically quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC). The study emphasizes the grafting of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) onto QCMC to enhance water absorption, antimicrobial activity, and biodegradability. The SAPs are further modified through surface crosslinking to improve absorbency under load (AUL) and reduce gel blockage. The characterization of these SAPs involves advanced techniques such as NMR, FT-IR, XRD, and SEM, providing a comprehensive understanding of their structural and thermal properties. The results demonstrate that the synthesized SAPs exhibit exceptional water absorption capacities, rapid absorption rates, and significant antibacterial effects against common pathogens like E. coli and S. aureus. Additionally, the biodegradability of these SAPs is confirmed through soil burial tests, highlighting their potential for environmentally friendly applications in hygiene and medical fields. The optimization of reaction parameters and the detailed analysis of absorption kinetics further underscore the practical implications of these SAPs in real-world applications.
