Abstract

The article investigates the preparation and properties of patterned P-MWCNTs/PVDF functional membranes, focusing on their potential to revolutionize water purification technologies. It begins by discussing the limitations of conventional PVDF membranes, such as inadequate hydrophilicity and susceptibility to fouling, which hinder their effectiveness in demanding environments. The study introduces an innovative solution through the use of patterned membranes and the incorporation of phosphorus-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (P-MWCNTs). The patterning treatment significantly increases surface roughness and water contact area, enhancing wettability and boundary layer mass transfer. This modification leads to improved water flux and retention rates, with the patterned P-MWCNTs/PVDF membranes achieving a water flux of 915.47 L/(m²·h) and a retention rate of 93.37%, representing substantial improvements over unmodified membranes. The article also highlights the enhanced hydrophilicity and porosity of the modified membranes, with a porosity of 83.88% and a contact angle of 47.9°, indicating superior hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the modified membranes maintain good mechanical properties, with the incorporation of MWCNTs and PAA enhancing tensile strength and elongation. The article provides a detailed analysis of the experimental methods, including the preparation of P-MWCNTs, the fabrication of modified membranes, and the characterization techniques used to evaluate their properties. It also discusses the implications of these findings for the development of advanced water purification technologies, offering valuable insights into the optimization of membrane performance and the mitigation of fouling.
