Preparation, characterization and electrochemical performance of graphene from microcrystalline graphite

Abstract

Microcrystalline graphite, a kind of economic and resourceful graphite material, was used to synthesize graphene by oxidation–reduction method. The graphite/KMnO4 ratios were adjusted in an oxidation process, and the produced graphite oxide and reduced graphene oxide were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry in a three-electrode system. The curves maintain an ideal rectangular and symmetric shape, indicating that the product has good electrochemical properties. The results show that a remarkable increase in both the current density and specific capacitance can be observed for graphene at a graphite/KMnO4 ratio of 1:3.
