Abstract

The chapter delves into the abundant availability of wood waste and its potential for recycling into wood plastic composites (WPCs). It discusses the economic and environmental drivers pushing the recycling of wood waste, such as rising waste disposal costs, environmental awareness, and restrictive legislation. The market for WPCs is valued at billions of dollars and is projected to grow significantly, with polyethylene being the most commonly used material. The chapter also explores the use of biochar as a sustainable filler in WPCs, highlighting its advantages over traditional fillers like carbon black. Biochar, produced through pyrolysis, offers high stability and carbon content, making it a promising substitute in composites. The chapter further discusses the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of biochar-reinforced composites, showing promising results in various applications. It also touches on the challenges and future scope of using wood waste and biochar in the production of sustainable materials, emphasizing the potential for a circular economy.
