Primary Vegetation Successions at a Foreland of the South Chuya Glacation Center (Altai Mountains)

This study delves into the fascinating process of primary vegetation succession on the young moraines of the Sofiyskyi Glacier in the Altai Mountains. Focusing on the cryoarid climate of the South Chuya glaciation center, it identifies three distinct stages of succession: the pioneer stage, the second stage, and the third stage. Each stage is characterized by specific plant species and their adaptations to the harsh, cold environment. The study also compares these succession patterns with those observed in the more humid climates of Western Europe and North America, highlighting the unique challenges and dynamics of ecosystem formation in the Altai Mountains. The research provides a detailed analysis of the species composition, distribution, and projective cover of plants at each succession stage. It also discusses the role of different plant groups, such as grasses, mosses, and lichens, in the colonization of deglaciated areas. The study concludes that the growth rate of the projective cover of plants in the Altai Mountains is significantly lower than in more humid climates, emphasizing the importance of understanding local climatic conditions in ecosystem studies. By exploring the intricate relationships between plant species and their environment, this research offers valuable insights into the formation and development of primary vegetation in cold, dry climates.
