Abstract

In this paper, we describe the first Privacy Preserving Biometric Identification (PPBI) protocol built into the Bitcoin blockchain using the cryptographic construction of Zerocoin. Biometric templates are stored as encrypted in the Bitcoin blockchain and matching is performed by the Bitcoin network in the encrypted domain. This way, the centralized server in biometric systems that presents a single point of compromise will be replaced by the blockchain. Since the matching is performed in parallel to the processing of the spend transaction, much of the infrastructure required for the identification is outsourced to the Bitcoin network which maintains strong integrity of its data. Due to the anonymity in Zerocoin system, minting a Zerocoin breaks the link between the pseudo-identity of an authenticating Bitcoin user and its encrypted fresh biometrics attached to the spend transaction. Finally, we also discuss how biometric identification via Bitcoin transactions and resulting transaction fees can be a natural prevention against hill climbing attacks that are applicable even if the templates are stored as encrypted.
