Abstract

This study delves into the processes of moisture transport in the surrounding rock of Yulin Grottoes during rainfall events, highlighting the critical role of pore air pressure and temperature gradients. Through multi-scale investigations, including on-site monitoring, large-scale sand box tests, and small-scale experiments using a conglomerate block, the research identifies key factors influencing moisture movement. The findings reveal that pore air pressure and temperature changes significantly impact water content in the rock, with moisture transport driven by the rebalance of pore air pressure affected by rainfall, temperature, and atmospheric pressure. The study also explores the interaction between water content, pore air pressure, and other environmental factors, providing valuable insights for the conservation of grottoes in arid environments. The research concludes that moisture transport in the surrounding rock of Yulin Grottoes is a weak and slow process, primarily driven by pore air pressure variations during rainfall events.
