Abstract

The chapter explores the optimization of software product lines through stepwise design techniques, emphasizing the use of uniform random sampling (URS) to efficiently search vast product spaces. It delves into the historical context of the author's collaboration with Egon on software virtual machines and stepwise refinement. The JBook case study is highlighted as a masterful example of software design, demonstrating the composition of features in a suite of programs. The chapter also discusses the challenges and benefits of URS, comparing it with traditional performance models. It introduces the concept of Performance Configuration Space (PCS) graphs and their application in optimizing software performance. The author presents evidence supporting the efficiency of URS and its potential to provide more accurate results with fewer samples. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the future of software engineering research and the potential of mathematical approaches in solving fundamental design problems.
