Abstract

A set of studies was carried out aimed at determining the synthesis conditions and investigating the properties of intermetallic (mainly, ternary) compounds intended for alloying aluminum alloys, as well as analyzing the nature of alloying additive distribution in the surface layer of the alloy. The chemical composition of the alloy and its crystallization conditions determine the possibility of formation of the intermetallic compounds, their concentration, as well as the size and shape of the grains. The process of synthesis of the ternary intermetallic compounds was carried out using the methods of rapid (flash) cooling, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis, and mechanical alloying in a high energy-intensive apparatus for dispersing and activating solids. It was shown that as a result of flash cooling of the alloys, it is possible to obtain intermetallic compounds, which are not typical for equilibrium systems. It has been established that the mechanical synthesis method is more productive compared to self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) in terms of the amount of the resulting intermetallic phase of interest. The samples of aluminum rods with 3% intermetallic compounds were obtained by hot extrusion at 400°C and an extrusion ratio of 9. The results of the mechanical testing have demon-strated the ductile failure mode of the samples. The test results have shown an increase in tensile strength and microhardness parameters. By introducing the best hardening composition (Al18Mg3Mn2) in the amount of 3% to the aluminum matrix, it becomes possible to increase the strength by 10% and microhardness – by 30%. The synthesized intermetallic compounds can be used to improve the application properties of aluminum alloys, since they can be incorporated into the powders of such alloys in any reasonable quantity regardless of the equilibrium conditions of the system.
