Abstract

The article explores the production of second-generation ethanol and carboxymethylcellulose from sugarcane bagasse pretreated with low-cost ionic liquids. It begins by discussing the increasing demand for renewable energy and the evolution of biofuel production methods. The study focuses on the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass using ionic liquids such as sec-butylammonium acetate, which significantly increases cellulose availability. The authors optimize the hydrolysis process using a design of experiments approach, achieving a high conversion rate of holocellulose into fermentable sugars. Additionally, the study demonstrates the production of carboxymethylcellulose from the hydrolysis residue, highlighting the full utilization of the lignocellulosic material. The results show that the use of low-cost ionic liquids and optimized hydrolysis conditions can lead to efficient and cost-effective biofuel production.
