The new Audi A8 is the first model that comes fitted with an electrified powertrain and features mild hybrid technology. This technology centres on the 48-V electrical system, which is used to power the on-board network in the new Audi A8. The mild-hybrid drive comprises two central components: The first is the water-cooled 48-V belt-driven starter generator, which expands the potential of the conventional sprocket starter. The second is the lithium-ion battery, placed in the luggage compartment for energy storage, offering charge carrier capacity of 10 Ah and voltage of 48 V. Silent cruising with the new A8 becomes feasible at a speed of between 55 and 160 km/h. The vehicle can cruise with the engine switched off and generating no emissions for up to 40 s. One further innovation comes in the form of the predictive comfort mode: As soon as the vehicle in front of the Audi A8 starts moving, the engine kicks in, even if the brake is still applied. The drive management unit processes both route data and information from its highly interconnected set of sensors, including the front camera. This information is then used to determine whether the A8 cruises or recovers. Employing this approach also allows customers to leverage the mild-hybrid drive for fuel consumption savings of up to 0.7 l/100 km.
