At the IAA in Frankfurt, Federal Mogul Powertrain showcased new materials for valve seats and guides with improved heat dissipation. The production-ready, high-thermal conductivity materials and a specific copper-based coating can reduce valve-plate temperatures by up to 70 °C. By enhancing heat dissipation from the valve plate, the new valve seat materials reduce temperatures in the hottest part of the combustion chamber, which lowers gas temperatures at the end of compression ignition. As well as improving knock resistance, this enables a broader angular range for ignition, for more efficient combustion. Furthermore, the mixture enrichment – needed when later igniting the component protector of the exhaust gas line – is reduced, as are CO2 emissions. For outlet valves, every 20-°C reduction in critical temperatures helps avoid compromising each of the next and more expensive alloy pieces.
