Federal-Mogul Powertrain has developed new piston rings for use in commercial vehicle diesel engines to improve gas sealing. The eLine rings for installation in the second piston groove are designed to distribute oil more evenly around the cylinder bore, reduce gas forces on the running surface, and prevent radial ring instabilities. In bench tests, the supplier found scope to reduce blow-by gas by up to 20 %, which is claimed to boost mean effective pressure, which can be used to reduce fuel consumption. The protection achieved against local oil film breakdown, plus scope to reduce wear, boost robustness and minimize oil viscosity all help prolong service life.
