Forming an emergency lane often leads to a stressful situation for road users. As part of the Aorta project led by the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and together with partners, the mobility service provider Akka is conducting research into how the lane can be automatically cleared for emergency vehicles in road traffic. This is to be achieved by integrating infrastructure, sensor technology, communication, vehicle technology and display functions that enable coordinated decision-making levels of various degrees of abstraction from the operations control center to the automated driving maneuver. A decentralized data platform is being developed, which will be used by an artificial intelligence to make decisions for cooperative driving tasks and communicate them to the vehicles. The solution is based on current standards, so that no modification is required on the vehicle side to integrate participating vehicles.
