Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of innovation in addressing pervasive inefficiencies within global health systems, highlighting the potential of project management methods to drive meaningful change. It explores the use of systems-focused simulations (SFS) and systems-focused debriefing (SFD) as proactive tools for identifying and mitigating latent safety threats, thereby enhancing patient safety and promoting systemic resilience. The text emphasizes the integration of change management principles, such as Kotter's model, to ensure comprehensive planning, execution, and sustainable impact of SFS/SFD initiatives. Furthermore, it provides a detailed roadmap for implementing simulation-based training curricula, divided into planning, buildup, execution, and closure phases, to improve the preparedness of medical residents. The chapter also addresses the challenges faced in implementing these simulations, such as high costs and resistance to change, and offers strategies to overcome these barriers. By embedding innovative simulation strategies, healthcare organizations can drive improvements in care quality, reduce inefficiencies, and better prepare professionals for the complexities of modern medical practice.
